This site was created by participants in the seminar “Approaches to the Modern City” at Georgetown University in Spring 2020. The course explored themes in the history of modern cities around the world. Each student chose one city to study over the course of the semester.

It was no coincidence that several of the officials who had run this system moved into powerful positions at the League of Nations after the war, and one later helped to found the European Union. The League of Nations pioneered some of the earliest forms of international cooperation in matters of public health, economic policy and the policing of contraband.”
