History Professor and Library Special Collections Collaborate for New Course Offering

This coming semester, the Georgetown Library Special Collections and Professor Adam Rothman of the Georgetown History Department will be collaborating to offer students a unique new course: “Thinking About Archives.”

This collaboration depends a partnership between the Library and Professor Rothman which began with creating the Georgetown Slavery Archive as part of the University’s Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation initiative. 

The course will explore how archives gather, house, and organize the artifacts that make up the historical record and how historians wrestle with archival material in their research and writing. The class will also journey through time, examining the theory, history, and practice of archives from the ancient to the digital. Throughout the semester, students will work closely with staff in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections and visit other archives in the DC area.
